Janis Mills Obituary

Janis Maria Mills, known affectionately as Janis to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024, at the age of 75. Born on July 16, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland, Janis was a lifelong resident of the city she loved. Her warm presence and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A proud graduate of Frederick Douglass Senior High School, Janis furthered her education at Dundalk Community College, where she earned an Associate's degree. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a dedicated member of Faith Christian Worship Center, where she began attending church and later became an ordained minister. Janis' commitment to her community was evident in her work. She retired from the State of Maryland after years of dedicated service and was a warm presence as a greeter at her church, touching the lives of many. She also was an Elections Judge for the City and State, always encouraging people to exercise their right to vote. Her entrepreneurial spirit was demonstrated throughout her venture with selling Avon products.

Music and ministry were significant parts of Janis' life. She sang on the church choir and led the singles ministry, sharing her faith and joy through song and fellowship. Janis' love of life extended to her personal interests as well. A lover of shopping, her favorite places included Macy's and any clothing store at the mall. She relished in the joy of traveling and absolutely loved – and I mean loved getting her Chick-fil-A.

Janis' life was a reflection of her loving, friendly, and faith-filled spirit. She went above and beyond in all her endeavors, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met. Her ability to light up a room with her smile and her unwavering positivity will be remembered by all. Her answering machine message was a testament to her caring and friendly nature, always reminding callers to smile because Jesus loved them, and “so do I.”

Janis' legacy is carried on by her loving family. She is survived by her sons, Aaron and his children, Derek, Alyssa, and Kara, and their loving mother Julie; Michael and his children, Sierra and Shayne, and their loving mother Dawn; and Kenny and his sons, Keith and Keon, and their loving mother Maria; and Kai and his loving mother Tyrica.  Janis was the cherished daughter of the late Dorothy Felton and Sylvester Wilson. She was the dear sister to Roland (deceased), Sheila (deceased), Carol, Dorothy, Wanda, Delma, Sylvester, Arnold, Sharon, Clifton (deceased), and Marshell/Marcy. A caring aunt and friend, Janis's legacy of love extends to a host of nieces, nephews, and an abundance of friends who will carry her memory forward.

As we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart generously shared Janis’ legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Janis' life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of community, and she will be profoundly missed by all.
