Leroy Jones, Sr Obituary

Celebration of Life

Leroy Jones Sr., a beloved father and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Born on April 5, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland, Leroy was the son of Nicholas and Lillian. He was the fourth of five children and he and his siblings Wiley, Verma, Geraldine, and Reginald grew up in a close-knit household. Leroy was educated in Baltimore City Public schools and from a young age, carried a quiet strength and thoughtful spirit that stayed with him throughout his life.

Leroy married Martha, and together they had three children. He was a devoted father and grandfather whose love and support were a source of comfort. His warmth, humor, and steady wisdom left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Leroy was employed in several professions throughout his life. He worked for Baltimore City Public Schools, The Baltimore Sun, and retired from Bethlehem Steel.

Leroy and Patsy, his partner for over 40 years, loved to travel, entertain, and have dinner with friends.  A lifelong student of the world, Leroy found joy in new experiences, good conversation, and the art of simply being present. But perhaps his deepest passion was for jazz, not just the music, but the culture, the energy, and the way it made the city come alive. He was a sharp dresser and familiar face at social clubs around the city. He frequented Baltimore’s live jazz venues like Caton Castle, Maceo’s, Odyssey Lounge, and Keystone Korner where he could be found with a content smile on his face, soaking in every note. Live shows were his sanctuary, a place where he connected with friends, artists, and the spirit of the music he loved.

Leroy was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael, and he carried that loss with grace and quiet strength.

He is survived by his loving partner Patsy; his children - Yvonne and Leroy Jr. (Angela); his grandchildren - Kennard, David (Willinette), London, Yvonne, Dainekia, Michael Jr. (Shanay), Keasha, Kent, Velesa, and Leroy III; 18 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren, and a wide circle of extended family and cherished friends.

Those who knew Leroy will remember him for his warmth, his love of good music, and his gentle wisdom. His legacy is one of kindness, rhythm, and presence…a life lived in tune with the world around him.
